about

Memory is strange, meandering through the passage of time according to our personal triggered thoughts. But what of our perception of other peoples memories ?

Memories are personal accounts expressed in cerebral form. There are memories that remain unconsciously lingering in our minds and in the minds of others; collective memory. It is this in particular that intrigues me; the idea of extracting hidden collective memories and expressing them in sound and piano music.

All the track titles on this recording relate to this idea. 'Kurakin’s Diary', 'They Walked Alone', 'Occurrence', 'Theatre Of Aliens' and 'Previous Owners' are responses to my discovery of the diary of Constantin Kurakin, my maternal grandfather, who lived as a young man in Tsarist Russia and escaped the turmoil and conflicts after the revolutions of 1917.

The suite 'When Stravinsky met Khrushchev' is my re-imagining of the feelings and conversations of Igor Stravinsky when he revisited Russia after fifty years absence.

'What Did You Say' and 'Three Strangers' concern the horror of memory loss, whilst 'Still In The Stillness', 'Nobody's Waltz' and 'Meditation On Mars' are dedicated to lost memories.
